Top Load Washing Machine Not Working? Common Problems & Easy Fixes

Dubai’s hard water, year-round heat, and back-to-back laundry loads push your top-loader harder than anywhere else. Here’s what’s wrong — and how to fix it fast.

Living in Dubai means your washing machine works overtime. Between the desert dust, mineral-heavy hard water, and back-to-back loads from a busy household, your top-load washer takes a beating every week. When it stops working — right before a busy morning— the disruption is real. Most problems, though, have clear causes. Here’s what you need to know.

Common Problems Why Top Load Washing Machine Not Working are:

1

Washing machine won't start or turn on

This is the first thing Dubai residents panic about — and usually the easiest to resolve. Many apartments in Al Karama, Bur Dubai, and Deira have shared electrical panels that trip under heavy summer load.

Causes

Tripped circuit breaker, lid not fully closed, child lock activated, or a faulty lid switch sensor

Fix

Check the power cord, reset any tripped breaker, confirm the lid is shut, and deactivate child lock. Try unplugging for 60 seconds to reset the control board.

Technician Tip

If the display lights up but won't run a cycle, the lid switch is the prime suspect — not a power supply fault.

2

Washer not draining — water sitting in drum

Standing water after a cycle is one of the most searched washing machine problems in Dubai. Hard water mineral deposits clog the drain pump filter faster here than anywhere else.

Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump motor.

Fix

Check for kinks in the drain hose at the back. Clear the pump filter (usually behind a small front access panel). Run a spin-only cycle. If water still won't drain, the pump may need replacement.

Technician Tip

The drain hose should sit no more than 15 cm into the standpipe — too deep causes a siphoning effect and prevents drainage.

3

Washer not spinning — clothes soaking wet

Overloading is the top reason. Also, concentrated detergents sold in UAE supermarkets create excess suds that trigger automatic spin slow-down.

Causes

Unbalanced load, too much detergent, worn drive belt, or lid switch fault.

Fix

Redistribute laundry evenly. Use less detergent. Run a spin-only cycle to test. If still failing, the belt or lid switch needs checking.

Technician Tip

Avoid washing one heavy item alone, like a bedsheet or towel. The drum may lose balance and stop mid-spin, so add another heavy item or a few lighter clothes to balance the load.

4

Drum not moving — no agitation

Machine fills with water and hums, but the drum doesn't move? The mechanical link between the motor and agitator has broken down. Don't delay this one — clothes aren't getting clean without it.

Causes

Worn agitator dogs (small plastic teeth inside the agitator), broken motor coupling, or a stripped drive belt.

Fix

Remove the agitator cap and inspect the plastic teeth — replacing a worn set costs as little as AED 15–30. On direct-drive models, check the motor coupling first.

Technician Tip

Agitator dogs wear out faster when the washer is overloaded. If they fail again within a year, overloading is likely the cause. Reduce load size.

5

Loud noise or vibration during cycle

Marble and tiled floors — found in nearly every Dubai home — amplify vibration significantly. A machine that shakes the walls needs attention before it damages itself or the flooring.

Causes

Machine not level, foreign object in drum (coins, underwire), worn drum bearings, or transit bolts not removed on a new unit.

Fix

Level the machine by adjusting its feet. Check the drum for loose items and remove back transit bolts if it’s newly installed. Grinding noise may mean worn bearings.

Technician Tip

Place a rubber anti-vibration mat under the machine. It helps reduce noise on marble floors and protects both the floor and washer parts from long-term vibration damage.
